The Great Botanical Revival… here’s how to utilise natural remedies
After years of chasing the next miracle molecule, consumers are turning away from quick fixes and towards ingredients that have centuries of traditional use. But do they actually work?
For much of the last decade, wellness has been obsessed with discovering the next breakthrough ingredient. Ashwagandha, sea moss, mushroom coffee, and NAD+. Every year seemed to bring another ‘super ingredient’ promising better sleep, sharper focus, or a longer life. Admittedly, we are tired of trying them all.
Now in 2026, things are shifting. Consumers are becoming more sceptical of miracle cures and one-size-fits-all solutions… and rightly so. As health literacy grows, people are becoming more interested in clinical evidence, transparent formulations, and ingredients with a clear rationale for inclusion.
Our ingredients must now have a history and evidence showing they are compounds that have stood the test of time and withstood scientific scrutiny. It's a shift that's been reflected across the wellness industry, with this year's Vitafoods Europe, one of the world's largest nutrition and supplement exhibitions, highlighting botanicals, women's health, and clinically supported formulations as some of its biggest trends.
Thanks to advances in nutritional science and analytical technology, researchers can now identify the active compounds inside many traditional herbs and plants. This means that they can start testing remedies that were once passed down through generations. Instead of dismissing centuries of herbal medicine as folklore, modern science is beginning to explain why many of these ingredients earned their reputation in the first place.
Chamomile
Long before chamomile became synonymous with your favourite cosy bedtime tea, it was one of the world's most respected medicinal plants. The ancient Egyptians dedicated chamomile to Ra, the sun god, believing it possessed healing powers. Greek physician Hippocrates documented its medicinal use, whilst medieval monks cultivated it in monastery gardens as one of Europe's essential healing herbs. Roman soldiers were even said to carry chamomile to soothe aching muscles after long journeys!
Chamomile contains naturally occurring flavonoids, most notably apigenin, which interacts with receptors in the brain involved in relaxation. A growing body of research suggests chamomile may support sleep quality and help ease feelings of anxiety, while systematic reviews have also found promising evidence that it may reduce menstrual pain and associated symptoms.
Passion Flower
Passion flower's story begins long before wellness podcasts said it's the new fad we should all invest in. Indigenous communities across South America had used the striking purple flower medicinally for generations before Spanish missionaries encountered it in the 16th century. The missionaries named it after the Passion of Christ, believing different parts of the flower symbolised elements of the crucifixion.
Centuries later, researchers are exploring its effects on the nervous system. Studies suggest passion flower may influence GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), one of the brain's primary calming neurotransmitters. Several randomised clinical trials have reported improvements in mild anxiety and sleep quality compared with placebo, making it an increasingly popular ingredient in formulations designed to support relaxation and overnight recovery.
Lemon Balm
Known botanically as Melissa officinalis, lemon balm has been cultivated for more than 2,000 years. Its name comes from the Greek word melissa, meaning ‘honey bee’, because of the plant's ability to attract pollinators. During the Middle Ages, Carmelite monks famously used lemon balm to create ‘Carmelite Water’, a botanical tonic believed to calm the nerves and lift the spirits.
And today's findings aren’t that dissimilar. Clinical studies suggest lemon balm may help promote feelings of calm while supporting aspects of memory and cognitive performance during stressful situations. As our understanding of recovery expands beyond muscles alone, ingredients that support the nervous system are becoming just as relevant as those that support physical repair.
Elderberry
For centuries, elderberry has been a staple of traditional European herbal medicine. Hippocrates is believed to have referred to the elder tree as his ‘medicine chest’, while throughout the Middle Ages it was commonly used in syrups and tonics to support seasonal wellbeing.
Modern science has focused on its exceptionally high concentration of anthocyanins (the antioxidant pigments responsible for its deep purple colour). Several studies suggest elderberry may help support immune function and reduce the duration of common cold symptoms, although evidence remains mixed and researchers continue to investigate exactly how it works.
Rosemary
Few herbs have a richer cultural history than rosemary. In Ancient Greece, students are said to have worn rosemary garlands while studying because the herb was believed to strengthen memory. Shakespeare even referenced it in Hamlet, writing, "There's rosemary, that's for remembrance."
This is because rosemary contains compounds such as carnosic acid and rosmarinic acid, both of which possess antioxidant properties. Small human studies have also suggested that both rosemary extract and even its aroma may support alertness, memory and cognitive performance, although larger clinical trials are needed before firm conclusions can be drawn. Shakespeare might have been on to something there.
Magnesium
While not technically a botanical, magnesium has become one of the defining ingredients of modern recovery, so it feels worth a mention. Every cell in the body depends on magnesium, and it acts as a co-factor in more than 300 enzymatic reactions, supporting everything from muscle contraction and energy production to electrolyte balance and nerve signalling.
Research suggests many adults fail to consume enough magnesium through diet alone, while physically active people may have even greater requirements because exercise increases magnesium losses through sweat and urine. For women balancing training, work, and everyday life, ensuring adequate magnesium intake is one of the simplest evidence-based ways to support recovery.
